As information technology advances and becomes further entwined in everyone’s daily lives, all levels of government must find efficient and effective means of leveraging technology to better accomplish their agency’s goals.
Government entities must work together in the future more than they have in the past, as this sharing of data and solutions can greatly benefit all. For example, the IT staffs of school districts and county governments, while supporting different constituencies, must solve similar challenges in networking, security, Web development and many other technical areas. Working together by sharing knowledge – and sometimes resources – will benefit all.
To encourage and facilitate this necessary sharing, the South Carolina chapter of Government Management Information Sciences (SC.GMIS) was established in 2001. SC.GMIS, which is modeled after similar organizations in neighboring states, is the first organization in South Carolina to brings together the IT representatives of cities, counties, school districts, state agencies, higher education, regional libraries
and other such public entities.
Even today, SC.GMIS is the only organization that recognizes all members as equals. Every member, whether they belong to a state, county, or municipal government (or school board or other government educational institution) is bestowed the same rights as a member.
Remember that if your agency is a member, then YOU are a member.
Once the agency joins, all agency employees are considered members of SC.GMIS.
Purpose
SC.GMIS is a chapter within the GMIS International organization.
The purpose of GMIS is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, information and techniques; to foster enhancement in hardware, software and communication developments as they relate to government activities.
Over twenty-five years ago, a group of computer professionals, realizing all of us need help from time to time, organized GMIS International to foster sharing among all levels of government involved in our endless world of technology. Not to be confused with other user groups, GMIS focuses solely on sharing situations related to
government information processing.
